this week in global youth cultures
A POST FROM KILEY'S BLOG Transgendered individuals experience extreme adversity, particularly at the hands of those unwilling to cooperate with an innovating society. Transgender teens, now more frequently than ever, are accepting their true identities. American culture, however, is not as quick to support this change.
Controversy is created when values clash, legality and sports being a common example. Because Texas athletic state rules ban females from competing with men, and many residents do not believe transgendered boys should be seen as male, as indicated in their lack of laws to protect the LGBT community. The same state now faces a new dilemma; a boy has won the girls wrestling state title. This is now a world-wide controversy. Many people that may have been skeptical of accepting transgender teens seem to have gained a new perspective, agreeing that this transgender boy is a boy and he should compete with other boys. Could this be a push toward a societal acceptance of transgender teens?

This article was posted about six months ago. It touches on the subject of risks that teenagers are putting themselves at with today's society in the United States. The information comes from the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions Youth Risk Behavior Survey which is conducted every other year. These facts relate to those that live in this country and not others but it is interesting to compare to those in other countries and see what differs. There are six categories that this survey addresses;
1. Motor Vehicles are the leading cause of death 2. Cigarette smoking is decreasing but electronic cigarette usage is increasing 3. Prescription drugs are being consumed without doctor approval 4. Less sexual activity but also less preventative care for those who are sexually active 5. Calories consumed is increasing leading to obesity 6. Electronics is reducing physical activity These categories are very obvious to what the risks are for the youth of this country. It is almost every day that we face these problems whether it's for ourselves or someone close to us. It is interesting to relate it to our own lives because you never think of the consequences to your actions until it is too late. Although this article is based on the youth of this country it is truly the defining factor of comparison between us and other countries around the world. It shows the differences within the society. I think it is important to look at the facts gathered and try to make a difference because these teenagers are the heart of the future. Today's selection is about how young artists are using their creativity for social justice. Check it out and share your comments!
